about

Salutation is an antiquated word for the Annunciation and this carol again tells the story of the Archangel Gabriel’s encounter with the Virgin Mary. It comes from a manu- script in the Bodleian Library, Oxford (MS Eng. poet. E 1) which may have belonged at one time to Beverley Minster (East Yorkshire). Clearly a popular carol is is also detailed the ‘Commonplace Book’ of Richard Hill (who became mayor of the City of Lodon in 1504) alongside such varied entries as recipes English, French and Latin poetry and medicinal remedies including a “medicen for
a doge that is poysent”!
