about

This carol is found in Ravenscorft’s third collection of songs, catches and canons entitled Melismata; musical phansiesfitting to the court, citie, and countrey humours (1611). Some of the pieces in these books seem to have been newly composed in a traditional style and others are records of much older existing songs and it is not clear which category this falls into. The full text appears only in one voice though we have added some vocal lines as well as instrumental ones. Stingo is a traditional tune collected by Playford and found in the
1651 publication of his ‘The English Dancing Master’.
